Hiking Excursion to Tsey Glacier: The Path to the Ice Giant
We invite you on a classic mountain hike to the foot of one of the most accessible and impressive glaciers in the Caucasus. This is a route where every step brings you closer to eternity, and the air becomes crystal clear.
What you will see during the excursion.
- Eco-trail: the path runs through the territory of the North Ossetian Nature Reserve. You will walk through a fairy-tale pine forest, among ancient boulders covered in emerald moss.
- The Skazdon River: most of the trail runs along the banks of the turbulent glacial river. You will see how a powerful stream is born right from under the icy shell.
- The Majesty of the Glacier: the goal of the hike is the tongue of the Tsey Glacier. You will be able to see up close the giant crevasses, the pale blue mass of ancient ice, and feel the icy breath of the mountains.
- Mount Monk: throughout the entire journey, the majestic peak shrouded in legends will tower above you — the faithful guardian of Tsey Gorge.
- On the way back, it's possible to visit Biragzang (hot thermal springs).
What awaits you:
- Start of the Journey: we drive to the Kardon of the reserve and then hike 4 km to the Tsey glacier one way with an elevation gain of 300m.
- Comfortable Transport: we use our vehicles to reach the starting point of the route.
- Caring Guides: our guides are experts in the local area who will share not only facts but also captivating legends of Ossetia with you.
- Stops for Photos and Rest: restroom stops and time for lunch in national cafes and restaurants with mountain views (additional payment on-site) are provided.
- Comfort: the trail is well-trodden and equipped with signs, making the walk safe and pleasant. Possible encounter with turs (mountain goats).
- Photo Locations: every turn reveals new panoramas: from forest landscapes to harsh moraines and rocky peaks.
Tour Duration: from 7 to 8 hours.
Excursion Format: combined (vehicle and hiking).
Difficulty Level: Beginner Trekking (good physical fitness required).
Food and Drinks: you can bring snacks and water; if desired, it's possible to stop at a cafe along the way (payment on-site).
Equipment: weather-appropriate clothing, comfortable shoes, a charged phone/camera, Power bank, and a charging cable for mobile devices.
Tsey Glacier is one of the rare places in the Caucasus where you can see the tongue of a huge, living glacier without having mountaineering skills or undertaking a multi-day, difficult trek.
