Tseyskoe Gorge: Glaciers and Shrines
Excursion "Tsey Gorge": In the Embrace of Glaciers and Ancient Sanctuaries
Tsey Gorge is one of the most famous, high-altitude, and mystical places in North Ossetia. Not just a natural reserve — it's a sacred land where key Ossetian sanctuaries are located and majestic glaciers originate.
Tsey is the perfect place for those who want to experience a combination of harsh Caucasian nature, active recreation, and deep immersion into the spiritual culture of the Ossetians.
What you will see during the excursion.
- Skazka (Fairy Tale) Glacier: the main natural attraction of the gorge. The glacier's tongue descends almost to the very tourist base.
- Cable Car Ride (payment on-site): you can ascend on an old but reliable cable car, which offers breathtaking views of the glacier and the surrounding five-thousand-meter peaks.
- Rekom Sanctuary (Rekomy Dzuar): one of the main male sanctuaries in all of Ossetia, a unique wooden structure assembled without a single nail — a place of power and reverence for traditions.
- Uastyrdzhi Monument: the patron saint of men. In the epic tales of Alania, he is depicted as a gray-bearded elder on a white horse. Women, by tradition, call him "Lægty Dzuar" (God of Men).
- Cave of the Black Rider (Sau Barag): a place of power and mysteries, allowing you to touch the ancient culture and mythology of Ossetia.
- Chiramad Gate: a medieval stone arch, presumably built in the 17th century.
- Verkhny Mizur: a true open-air museum, one of the most colorful and photogenic places of "frozen history" in North Ossetia.
- Biragzang Thermal Springs: the perfect end to a day in the mountains. Relax in healing hot water under the open sky with a view of the peaks.
